Ordering and buying: Can I have..., please?
In a café, a shop or at the ticket office: asking politely with Can I have...? and I'd like..., asking prices, buying a ticket and paying.
Why
You are at the counter of a café in Dover. There is a queue behind you. How do you order a hot chocolate and a scone quickly and politely?
You order and buy things on every trip: a drink, a sandwich, a souvenir, a train ticket. These are short conversations, and they almost always go the same way.
Being polite matters a lot in English. If you say I want a cola, you sound rude, even if you do not mean to. With Can I have...?, please and thank you you are always fine.
