Plurals and articles: a, an, the
You choose a or an by the sound, you make plurals with -s, -es or -ies, and you learn the words that do it differently.
You can start right here: nothing needed first.
Why
You are with your class in a sandwich shop in Canterbury. How do you ask for two sandwiches and an orange juice without the shop assistant frowning?
Almost every English sentence has a noun in it: a thing, an animal or a person. In front of it there is often a, an or the, and if there is more than one, the word changes.
Dutch works differently: it uses ‘een’ for everything and has its own plurals. That is why Dutch speakers easily say a apple or two childs. With a few rules and a handful of words learnt by heart, you will be fine.
