Comparing: taller, the tallest, more beautiful
Short words take -er and -est, long words more and most. After a comparative comes than, and when things are equal they are as tall as each other.
Why
You are talking to an English friend about the best footballer, the most expensive trainers and the scariest film. How do you say who or what wins?
You compare things all the time: bigger, faster, more beautiful, the best. In a gaming chat, in a film review or when you point at the tallest tower in London.
Dutch and English are similar here (‘groter’, taller), but not quite the same. Long words take more and most in English, and the Dutch ‘dan’ becomes than. That is where it often goes wrong.
