Reading for gist
You do not need to know every word to understand an English text. Look at the title, the first and last sentence and the key words.
Why
Someone hands you an English leaflet from a museum in London. Do you really need to look up every word?
No. If you translate every word, you read slowly and lose the thread. If you look for the main idea first, you know what the text is about in half a minute.
That is how you read in Dutch too: a headline, the first sentence, and then you decide whether to read on. With the same tricks you can read an English news story, the rules of a game or a letter from your pen friend.
