False friends: words that trick you

Some English words look like Dutch words but mean something else. Eventually means ‘in the end’, brave means ‘not afraid’ and slim means ‘thin’.

First stage of secondary schoolAges 12 to 14Draft: Not yet checked by an English teacher.

Why

In a café in Brighton you ask: Can I become a glass of water? The waiter laughs. What did you actually say?

English and Dutch are related. That is why you recognise many words straight away: water, house, book. That helps a lot, until you meet a word that looks the same but means something else.

Become means ‘start to be’, not ‘get’ (the Dutch ‘bekomen’). So you asked if you could turn into a glass of water. Words like that are called false friends: they seem friendly, but they trick you.
