Possessives: my, your, Tom's
Whose is it? You learn my, your, his, her, its, our, their, the apostrophe in Tom's bike and the girls' room, and mine and yours.
Why
You are introducing your family to your pen friend in Manchester. How do you say that Emma is Tom's sister, without the sister of Tom?
You talk about who owns what all day long: your room, your brother's bike, the neighbours' dog. English has small words for that, and an apostrophe.
The words look a bit like Dutch, but they are stricter: his belongs to a boy, her to a girl, its to a thing or an animal. And the apostrophe is not always in the same place.
